Create Apache/Nginx Basic Auth credentials

Using the generated line

Append the line to your /etc/nginx/.htpasswd or /etc/apache2/.htpasswd file, one user per line:

admin:$2a$10$ZE5...
api_user:$apr1$...

    auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
}

Algorithm choice

  • bcrypt — strongest, recommended for production. Use 10+ rounds.
  • APR1 — Apache's MD5 variant. Common but weaker than bcrypt.
  • SHA1 — legacy support, do not use for new deployments.
  • Plain — only for quick testing on trusted networks.
